How to use

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it compresses better than JPG at the same quality, but HEIC isn't universally supported by older software, websites, and non-Apple devices. Converting to JPG trades a bit of file size for compatibility with essentially everything.

Why do iPhone photos save as HEIC instead of JPG?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format) compresses photos to roughly half the file size of JPG at similar visual quality, saving storage space. Apple has used it by default since iOS 11.
Does converting to JPG lose quality?
There's a small amount of re-compression loss, as with any JPG re-encoding, but at high quality settings (used by default here) it's generally not visible to the eye. If you need the absolute original, keep a copy of the source HEIC file.
Is this really private, or does the file get uploaded first?
No upload happens — the HEIC file is decoded and converted directly in your browser using WebAssembly. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and conversion still works.
