Number to Words Converter
Enter a number and get it written out in words — plain English or check-writing format with cents. Handles negative numbers and values up to trillions.
How to use
Type the amount (use a dot for decimals) and press “Convert”. Copy the result straight into a check, invoice or contract.
Writing amounts in words prevents tampering and misreading: “1,500” can be altered, “one thousand five hundred” cannot. That is why banks and legal documents still require it.
FAQ
How do I write dollar amounts in words on a check?
Write the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction of 100: $1,234.50 → “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 50/100”. Our “currency” mode produces exactly this format.
Should I use “and” when writing numbers in words?
In American English, “and” is reserved for the decimal point: 250 is “two hundred fifty”, while 250.75 is “two hundred fifty and 75/100”. British English commonly says “two hundred and fifty”.
How are hyphens used in numbers written as words?
Hyphenate compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine: “forty-two”, “three hundred sixty-five”. The converter applies hyphens automatically.
What is the largest number the converter supports?
Up to 999 trillion, with decimals. Negative numbers are prefixed with “minus”.
